Massages in Thailand remain based around the use of oils, gels or creams as well as waxes. I think this is because of the large number of messages (masseurs) who are hired to offer massage services. A majority of Thai massage spas continue to employ oil-based treatments since they are considered "luxurious".
Additionally, many massage spas located in northern Thailand have taken on the idea of using aroma therapy and "Oriental herbal medicine." These techniques are used across Europe and in the United States and Canada. However, the majority of massage spas in Thailand that I have been to do not practice these traditional forms of healing art. I believe that this is due to the fact that these kinds of methods do not align to the rules of the larger, more conservatively operated massage spas located in northern Thailand.
My experience using traditional Burmese massage revealed a unique approach to massage than the westerners I was studying. This type, which I would call "Myanma" or "Myrobalan", involves gentle pressure being applied to certain acupoints within the body. This is done mainly through pressing. This massage technique involves lengthy strokes, which are different from those used in most Thai massage techniques, where the massage therapist is using both hands. After the massage my skin felt softer and I was able sleep comfortably.
I also learned that the traditional Burmese massages are usually accompanied with a specific herbal mix. The most commonly used ingredients are some of the ingredients like Lavan, Brahmi and Mistletoe. Though the herbs are different from one region to another and are used for different purposes, the main goal is to help you feel an overall feeling of wellbeing. In addition to the traditional Burmese massage techniques, my study revealed that in the northern part of Thailand numerous massage therapists make use of Ostrich feathers as well as ginseng to aid their clients who have difficulties with muscle spasms caused by arthritis.
